100 Legendary Mercedes Tell Their Extraordinary Story in Szeged

Hungary Today 2024.04.16.

On April 20-21, the Classic Car Show & Expo in Szeged (southern Hungary) will present around 100 legendary Mercedes-Benz classics from the past 60 years, featuring real rarities, beautiful cars, and famous people’s former cars, writes Turizmus.com.

The R129, W140, 300 SL Gullwing, or even the C220 Elegance alone will only mean something to the most fanatical Mercedes fans, but there is a story behind almost every piece at the Classic Car Show & Expo, making this unique exhibition an exciting journey through time.

For example, visitors can see a rare Mercedes-Benz SL500, which has an exciting story because it is unknown.

The sports car was stolen from a dealership in 1991, and only found at the end of 2018.

The convertible, powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine, was on the list of stolen cars for 27 years. When it was found, it turned out to have been very much underused, having covered just 1,909 km over three decades, an average of 194 meters a day since it left the Stuttgart production line in October 1991. The car is now in the hands of a Hungarian collector and will be on display in Szeged.

The cars used by the Republican Guard Regiment (a state organization in Hungary whose main tasks were the protection of heads of state at home and abroad, the guarding of objects of high state importance, and the security of domestic and foreign state events) will be on display, such as the Mercedes-Benz W126 used by Árpád Göncz (President of Hungary between 1990 and 2000), the W140 once used by László Sólyom (President of Hungary from 2005 until 2010), and the Mercedes-Benz W202 C220 Elegance, which was reserved for Gyula Horn (former prime minister) and his family between 1994 and 1998, and of which model the Republican Guard Regiment ordered five brand new cars in 1994.

One of these was used by Gyula Horn between 1994 and 1998, allegedly often driven by himself. The car was later inherited and driven for many years by former President János Áder. It was later garaged as a “spare” car and scrapped in 2008, but it rolled on for another 15 years in the hands of its new owner.

In addition, those interested can also see one of the most expensive Mercedes cars in the world,

a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, a true wonder.
