Yet Another Car Crash Involving a Migrant Smuggler in Hungary

Hungary Today 2022.11.14.

The smuggler who caused the accident fled the scene but was caught by the police the same day. The man was transporting a dozen migrants in his car when he crashed into a tree on Sunday.

The incident took place on the outskirts of Ruzsa in the Hungarian county of Csongrád-Csanád. A 32-year-old Bulgarian man crashed into a tree on an unpaved road for unclear reasons at around 9 am on Sunday. When the police arrived at the scene, no one was in the car, but 12 foreigners were found near the scene. It turned out that the foreigners were passengers in the car.

Eight migrants were injured in the accident and were taken to hospital by ambulance. The others, who were not injured, will be escorted back to the temporary security border crossing after being interviewed by the police.

Six of the passengers identified themselves as Afghan and six as Indian citizens.

Although the driver fled the scene of the accident, he was apprehended by police in neighboring Bács-Kiskun County on the same day.

As Hungary Today reported earlier, the number of car crashes involving migrants and people smugglers has increased this year in Hungary. At the beginning of September, four people died and several others were injured outside Kapuvár, in western Hungary, after a car drove into the riverbed from a bridge. It was speculated that the car was probably carrying migrants.

At the beginning of August, three people were killed and eleven injured in an accident near Bócsa, 120 kilometers south of the Hungarian capital. The driver was a Georgian national who was trying to smuggle fifteen people across Hungary towards Western Europe in a car. The man did not give way at an intersection and collided with another car after which the vehicles caught on fire.

Meanwhile, migrants continue to arrive en masse at the Hungarian border, with more than 240,000 arriving this year so far.

Last year, only about half as many illegal migrants tried to cross the Hungarian border in the whole year. In addition to illegal migrants, the number of people smugglers caught by the police is also increasing. This year alone, 2,600 people smugglers have been caught by police.
