The World Music Expo (Womex) to be hosted by Budapest this autumn has attracted a record number of over 1 000 applications by the April 10 deadline, organiser and Womex jury member Balázs Weyer said.
A total of 70 performers and bands will be selected for the event to be held in Budapest from October 21 to 25, Mr. Weyer, of the Hangvető (SoundSower) music distribution company said. He said there was an especially high number of submissions from Central and Eastern Europe, which is a welcome development since the Budapest event will focus on presenting music from this region. The Palace of Arts in Budapest will show performances on five stages each day and one of these stages will be dedicated to Central and Eastern European performers. Other venues will include the Bálna and the A38 boat, both in Budapest
The World Music Expo counts as the world’s largest professional world music event. Hangvető Kft.’s application to organise the expo overtook 22 other cities to be named the winning bid by Womex’s international organisational bureau. The exposition will see the participation of around 270 exhibitors.
