World Cup 2018 Qualifiers: Faroe Islands vs Hungary – Match Preview!

Tamás Székely 2016.09.06.

Hungary’s national football team start their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign against the Faroe Islands tonight in Torshavn at 20.45 Central European time. As well as the home team, Hungary will also face two other teams who reached the knockout stages of Euro 2016 – Switzerland and eventual winners Portugal – in addition to Latvia and Andorra in Group B to reach the next World Cup to be held in Russia. From the nine European qualifying groups, only the winners go through automatically with the eight best second-placed teams contesting a play-off round for the last four places.

“The Euro is already behind us and we must close this chapter now. Now a new campaign starts where everything starts from zero”,  Bernd Storck said ahead of tonight’s game. “Of course the experience of the Euro and the positive memories can be useful as we start this new and even more difficult task. I hope we receive the trust from fans and everyone which we also received in France”, he added. “Faroe Islands are a very difficult opponent with a style of play probably most similar to that of Iceland. In Europe there are now no small teams and the Faroes have an excellent Danish coach. Physically they are very strong so an extremely tough match awaits us, Storck insisted.

The temperature in in Torshavn is around 10 degrees celsius with foggy, rainy weather expected. The Hungarian squad is reported to be fully fit and will train today in the stadium where the match will be played. The pitch is covered with artificial grass as the weather conditions are not good for natural grass pitches in the Nordic country. Bernd Storck has not shared the starting line-up with the media so far. The biggest question probably is that who will replace legendary goalkeeper Gábor Király, who announced his retirement from international football after the Euro 2016 campaign.

As for history, Hungary secured two hard-fought victories (1-0 in Torshavn and 2-1 in Budapest) against the Faroe Islands during Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. Tonight’s game will be the third clash on a football pitch between the two nations.
