“Fly or die…well what could be more thrilling”, the Rock Mafia song goes. It could be the hymn of the 2016 Red Bull Air Race World Championship, one of eleven in the line of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship series. The world-famous race of aerobatic pilots, also filled with adrenalin for the spectators, starts on the 16th of July in the capital of Hungary.
The iconic Chain Bridge in Budapest will once again feature in the Red Bull Air Race calendar as one of the most popular stops, Budapest always pulls in a monumental crowd to witness the racing action. In 2009, 650 000 spectators lined the banks of the Danube, and when the city earned a spot in the 2015 race season, fans returned in their thousands once again. For this season, it’ll be a summertime spectacle as the pilots head to Hungary on 16-17 July.
The whole Air Race World Championship includes 8 cities in 7 countries (USA, Japan, Austria, Hungary, UK, Germany, United Arab Emirates). This year, 14 professional pilots competethrough the Championship and actually each of them possible to win the cup.
In Budapest they have to pass this racetrack over the River Danube.
During the weekend of the race, numerous exciting and spectacular sports programs will be held on the banks of the River Danube. Just to mention some of them: there will be acrobatic basketball, wakeboard and freestyle soccer shows. What’s more, the world-famous Hungarian aerobatic pilot Péter Besenyei going to hold his aerobatic show and air parade on both weekend-days. Péter Besenyei’s title of ‘Godfather of the Red Bull Air Race’ is well-deserved. Having obtained his pilot’s licence aged 19 and been an aerobatic pilot since 1981, Besenyei is nothing short of a legend of the skies.
This time the iconic Hungarian aerobatic pilot officially says goodbye to his fans.
Within the programs of the Championship the Wellhello, the Margaret Island and the Cloud9+ hold concerts. You can have a look at the scheduled programs here.
For the days of the Air Race “festival” the traffic is going to be changed because the Chain Bridge and the main roads next to the river going to be closed.
