Women’s Water Polo: Hungary Trash Brazil To Clinch 9th Place In World Championship

Tamás Székely 2015.08.05.

Hungary’s female water polo team finished 9th place in the 2015 World Championships with a runout 22-7 win over Brazil. The Hungarian side’s final ranking shows the inconsistency of the team who also finished 9th at the 2011 world championships but made it to 3rd in Barcelona 2 years ago before now falling to 9th again in Kazan. Despite the success in the last game, head coach András Merész has offered his resignation to the Hungarian Water Polo Association right after the match.

Story of the day was the active Rita Keszthelyi who was obviously making a push to claim the tournament’s top goal-scorer trophy which she is likely to get after swimming away to a game-high 5 goals to finish with a total of 21. Not only Keszthelyi was strikingly active, so were her team-mates who looked determine to push the score to at least 20 pressing hard on the Brazilian girls before running out on the quick counterattacks throughout the match. It led to Dóra Czigány, Barbara Bujka and Dóra Kisteleki adding 4 goals each to the victory.

Hungary – Brazil 22-7 (5-2, 6-2, 6-0, 5-3)  –  (9th/10th place classification)
Hungary scorers: Rita Keszthelyi 5, Dóra Czigány 4, Barbara Bujka 4, Dóra Kisteleki 4, Dóra Antal 2, Gabriella Szűcs, Orsolya Takács, Krisztina Garda.
Brazil scorers: Marina Zablith 2, Izabella Chiappini 2, Amanda Oliveira, Melani Dias, Gabriela Mantellato.

Meanwhile the title-holder Hungarian men water polo could not make the semi finals in Kazan as team suffered a dramatic 8-7 defeat against Italy in the quarter finals on Tuesday. Head coach Tibor Benedek’s squad now have to settle for the 5th/8th place classification stage as they play against the United States on Thursday. The winner of the tie will compete with either Montenegro or Australia for 5th place.
