With Another Victory, MOL Vidi Nears Next Round in EL
Last night MOL Vidi FC beat Greek PAOK FC in Europa League’s group stage, propelling the Székesfehérvár club to second place in its group.
The two teams are fairly equal in strength, but thanks to trainer Marko Nikolics’ excellent tactical preparation, Vidi kept the whole game under its control. After snagging a victory (2-0) in Thessaloniki two weeks ago, Vidi managed to beat the Greeks for the second time in a row.
With yesterday’s triumph, MOL Vidi, second place in group L, is 3 points ahead of Belorussian BATE and PAOK. Group favorite Chelsea FC has already secured first place by winning all four of its games. But, there are still two legs to go. In the next leg, Vidi is scheduled to play BATE in Belarus, a crucial game because a draw would be a huge step towards qualification. The London star club will pay a visit to Budapest’s Groupama Arena in the last leg.
A qualification to the knockout phase would mean that the Székesfehérvárians would ‘survive’ autumn and ‘see’ the spring in either of the European cups—an achievement Hungarian football has lacked since Debrecen made it to the third leg of the UEFA cup back in 2004.
