“It is in Hungary’s interest that sober, strong nations based on true principles flourish in its neighborhoods as well,” said Árpád János Potápi, State Secretary for National Policy, in Trebišov (Tőketerebes), Slovakia, where he was speaking at the opening of the Count Gyula Andrássy Memorial Year on Wednesday.

In his speech at the Andrássy Mausoleum, State Secretary Potápi recalled some of the significant milestones in Andrássy’s life and his ties with his native land. He praised the former prime minister as a model of a true statesman and pointed out the message of many of his thoughts that still resonate today.

Fact

Count Gyula Andrássy de Csíkszentkirály et Krasznahorka (March 8, 1823 – February 18, 1890) was a Hungarian statesman who served as Prime Minister of Hungary (1867–1871) and subsequently as Foreign Minister of Austria-Hungary (1871–1879). Andrássy was a conservative; his foreign policies looked to expanding the Empire into Southeast Europe, preferably with British and German support, and without alienating Turkey.

Potápi said that Andrássy was a politician of national and even international importance, and one of his watchwords was hope.

“We believe in a Europe of nations, where sovereignty, rather than imperial interests, is the point of alignment and the sure foundation,” affirmed Potápi.
