Visegrad Monument Unveiled In Berlin To Mark Central Europe’s Contribution To German Re-Unification

By Tamás Székely // 2017.06.12.

A monument commemorating the Visegrad Four (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland) countries’ contribution to the reunification of Germany was unveiled in Berlin.

Erected at the central Berlin Wall memorial and near the longest remaining section of the Wall, a fortified border that had divided East and West Berlin during the cold war, Hans Joachim Albrecht’s work bears the title “Crouching figure straightening”.

The celebration was attended by former German parliamentary speaker Rita Süssmuth and Hungarian deputy parliamentary speaker Gergely Gulyás among other high-ranking German, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak and Polish diplomats.

Gergely Gulyás said in his speech that “despite our differences”, Germany is certain to remain the V4 group’s most important partner within the EU. With the UK leaving the bloc, Germany is to acquire a “leading role”, he said.
