DK Politician Varju Suspected of Violating Election Rules, Causing Bodily Harm

MTI-Hungary Today 2020.01.06.

Laszlo Varju, MP of the opposition Democratic Coalition, has been questioned as a suspect in connection with “crimes against the order of elections” as well as rowdy behaviour and causing bodily harm, the central investigative prosecutor’s office reported on Monday.

According to the prosecutor’s statement, Varju is believed to have offered a bribe to another candidate in the campaign before the 2018 general elections.

In another development, Varju, as a member of a group of opposition MPs protesting at public media headquarters in December 2018, demanded access to a studio and “charged at a line of security staff”. In the resulting tussle, he “squeezed the calf of one of the guards”, the statement said. Varju “exhibited violent opposition” and caused a guard, who suffered serious injuries, to fall onto the ground, the statement added.

Parliament earlier lifted Varju’s immunity in both cases. Varju has filed a complaint against the charges.
