Police confirmed the case, stating that a Ukrainian couple with eight children entered Hungary at the Tiszabecs road border crossing at 8:50 p.m. on March 11, 2022. When asked by police, the family, fleeing the war from Ukraine, said that they were not asking for help since they had already organized their onward journey to Germany, that they would be picked up shortly, and that they would only spend a few hours in Hungary. After the extended family got into the two cars, they then set off on the long journey ahead of them at around 1 a.m. on March 12, 2022.

A few minutes later, a little girl went to the aid center to look for her parents and siblings. It turned out that the 6-year-old girl had been in the restroom while her parents and siblings left the center. Police officers were immediately informed, but unfortunately had no information about the vehicles they had left in and could only guess which route they had taken. The police immediately took action and informed the police units in the area, but without success.

After about eight hours, the police officer in Tiszabecs was informed that the Austrian authorities had reported the following:

A Ukrainian couple in Austria had visited the police that they had lost their child, presumably in Hungary.”

After a quick international exchange of information, the parents returned to Tiszabecs to pick up the little girl.

The family was reunited in tears in Tiszabecs at about 7 p.m. on March 12, 2022.

The parents later said they miscalculated the children and drove off thinking they were all together until they realized at a rest area in Austria that their little girl was not in either car.
