The creation of the European health union would serve not only the interests of the entire community of the European Union but also those of Hungary, opposition Socialists MEP István Ujhelyi said on Thursday.
Commenting on remarks by Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, Ujhelyi told an online press conference that the European health union would result in shorter waiting lists, fewer hospital infections and fatalities, and higher wages in health care.
“Contrary to the government propaganda, [ruling] Fidesz spends less on health care than the EU average, so it is no accident that Hungary lags behind in quality of services and also in wages,” he said. “The differences are intolerable and the concept of a European health union would help overcome these,” he added.
