The Descent Of The Holy Spirit In Transylvania – Gallery Of The Pilgrimage In Csíksomlyó (Sumuleu Ciuc, Romania)

By Robert Velkey // 2017.06.06.

On the 3rd of June Hundreds of thousands of Hungarians, including Hungary’s President János Áder and First Lady Anita Herczegh attended the annual Pentecost Pilgrimage in Csíksomlyó (Sumuleu Ciuc, Romania).

President János Áder stressed the message of reconciliation in a homily delivered at a pilgrimage in Șumuleu Ciuc (Csíksomlyó), in central Romania. “Peace was the central message of Bishop András Veres’s homily,” Áder told journalists after the celebration of the mass. “We must make peace with ourselves as well as create peace within our families, communities, cities and countries. It would be welcome if this message was heard by as many people as possible,” he added. Áder noted that he was participating in the annual pilgrimage for the fifth time since taking the office of president. Hundreds of thousands of believers from Hungary, Transylvania and other places around the world, make the pilgrimage to Șumuleu Ciuc at Pentecost.

The Transylvanian village of Csíksomlyó became a pilgrimage site in 1567, when Hungarian king János Szapolyai wanted to convert the catholic Szekler (székely) population to Protestantism. The Szeklers refused to convert and fought back desperately. A battle took place on a nearby field, on Saturday before Pentecost, which was won by the Szeklers. Since then, the event has been commemorated by a pilgrimage when Catholics gather on Pentecost every year.

Since 1990, for today it is the largest Christian pilgrimage of the Hungarian nation. Annually at Pentecost, thousands of Christian Hungarians come together to pray from all over the world. The Fiesta takes place in the Shrine Church to Mary of Csíksomlyó and between the Somlyó Hills once a year at Pentecost.
