Szombathely, the City of St. Martin – Hungary in Pictures
In our weekly Instagram compilation, we are exploring a Hungarian city every Friday, to show you the most beautiful places outside Budapest. This time, we are traveling to Szombathely, the city where Europe’s most well-known saint, St. Martin was born. Szombathely – also known as Savaria by its Roman name – is the only city in the Carpathian Basin which has been continuously inhabited for 2000 years. The city has a rich history: one of the most significant trade routes of Europe, the Amber Road was stretching here; it is the place where Emperor Claudius let the veterans of the Roman Legion settle down. ; and the Iseum of Szombathely, the third largest Isis shrine in Europe can also be found there.
