Hungary’s number one football talent, Dominik Szoboszlai, signed with German RB Leipzig on Thursday. The CL-semifinalist Bundesliga side paid 20 million euros to Austrian RB Salzburg for the 20-year-old, the highest amount of money ever paid for a Hungarian player.

Szoboszlai is arguably the biggest Hungarian talent, who not only proved himself this year in the Austrian championships but also in the Champions League and the national team. In the latter, he scored the decisive goal against Iceland in the 90th minute. No wonder that many expect him to soon emerge as the next Hungarian world-class player after 80s star player Lajos Détári.

According to sports daily Nemzeti Sport’s summary, this is the first time this much money has been paid to a Hungarian. Only Balázs Dzsudzsák’s two most expensive transfers come close to this amount and that of Détári’s back in 1988 (his transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt to Olympiacos for 18 million German marks was the costliest one in that year worldwide).

However, if not only the nominal fee but also inflation is taken into account, then one of aging Hungarian winger Balázs Dzsudzsák’s past transfers still preceeds that of Szoboszlai, as in 2012 Dynamo Moscow paid 19 million euros for Anzhi Makhachkala for the Nyírlugos-born midfielder, which today would equal 20.67 million euros.

Interestingly, apart from these four transfers and two of striker Ádám Szalai’s, not another Hungarian was ever transferred for more than 5 million euros, while 3 million euros is enough to make the all-time top ten list of the most expensive Hungarian football players.

Szoboszlai could make his debut in Leipzig on January 9 in the German first league.
