Foreign Minister Urges Resolving Issue of Native-language Use, Education in Transcarpathia

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has expressed his agreement with the view of the Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner on the need to resolve the dispute surrounding the rights of Ukraine’s ethnic Hungarian community to use and be educated in their mother tongue.

In a Facebook entry after talks with Dunja Mijatovic in Strasbourg on Tuesday, Szijjártó said he and the commissioner were in agreement on the need to resolve the issue of native-language use and education in western Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region.

The minister said that after discussing the specific steps that needed to be taken in the matter with the leaders of the Council of Europe, he will hold talks on the language issue in Ukraine on Wednesday.
