Due to the epidemic situation, many people are not planning a holiday abroad this year and Lake Balaton may be one of the number one summer destinations for many Hungarians. Now that we have recently been able to finally enjoy some summer days and weeks, Hungary Today decided to collect some of the most beautiful and fun Instagram pictures from relaxing weekends at the beaches of Lake Balaton, and give a taste of some of the retro vibes that for many Hungarians brings back their childhood summers at the Hungarian sea: this “feeling” is perhaps most strongly expressed through the food and drink sold by lake-side stands, including the fried hake, lángos, and ice cream.
The “Hungarian sea” became the most popular holiday destination after the country lost Abbázia (Opatija, a town in coastal Croatia) as a part of the Treaty of Trianon. At the same time, the small buffets and kitchens of the capital popped up by the lake as well and started to sell lángos, hake, and other summertime foods. In the fifties, Lake Balaton was almost unimaginable without these, and for many there’s still no holiday at the Balaton without eating them.
But where to enjoy the Balaton weekends? As we reported before, most places around Lake Balaton have increased their prices, but luckily, there are still a couple of free beaches around the Balaton, mainly on the South side. Those who consider it more important to swim for free should target the south coast, but one can also find free beaches on the north side as well. However, the website warns that parking is not free in most places, even around free beaches – but most free beaches have restaurants, or at least buffets, and there are water areas, playgrounds, and in some places even lifeguards.
