Hungary Today’s new, recurring series ‘Summer in Hungary’ takes a look at some of the best places to enjoy the summer weather and spend your holidays. We will collect some of the most beautiful and fun Instagram pictures from a relaxing weekend at the beaches of Lake Balaton and Velence, the Balaton Cross Swimming and the Kékszalag Regatta, to rooftop bars, confectioneries, and wild parties at the best Hungarian music festivals. This week, we are traveling to Zamárdi.
Zamárdi is one of the most charming and family-friendly holiday resorts situated at the south bank of Lake Balaton. The city is popular among holidaymakers with its more than a kilometer-long grassy beach and because it is easily accessible by car on the M7 motorway, or by rail and ferry as well. The popular destination for holiday-makers from across Europe and beyond, is known for its stunning scenery, expansive beaches, and the surrounding wine-making region. It is also known for the music festivals held on its beaches, such as Balaton Sound and Strand Festival. The city also boasts a racing heritage with sailing and other water sports.
The 13th annual Balaton Sound festival has also started this week in Zamárdi and continues through the weekend on the south coast of Lake Balaton. Organizers are expecting some 170,000 visitors during the five days of the beach party, which brings the most prestigious names of the electronic and hip-hop scene to Hungary. Next weekend another huge event will be hosted by the lakeside city: Zamárdi is making its debut as host of the 2019 Red Bull Air Race World Championship July 13-14th. For the first time of the history of the Hungarian air races, the competition will take place over Lake Balaton instead of the River Danube in Budapest.
