Hungary Today’s new, recurring series ‘Summer in Hungary’ takes a look at some of the best places to enjoy the summer weather and spend your holidays. We will collect some of the most beautiful and fun Instagram pictures, from a relaxing weekend at the beaches of Lake Balaton and Velence, the Balaton Cross Swimming and the Kékszalag Regatta, to rooftop bars, confectioneries, and wild parties at the best Hungarian music festivals. This week we are exploring Lake Velence – the third largest lake in Hungary.
The lake itself is less than 50 kilometers from Budapest, creating an ideal destination for those living in the Hungarian capital or nearby. It is often referred to as the “sunshine lake” because of its high sunshine duration (2500 hours) per year. As a result of this and the shallowness of the lake, it is one of the warmest lakes in Europe.
Each year, more and more people visit Lake Velence, thus, it is now almost as popular a destination as the country’s signature waterfront, Lake Balaton. However, if anybody wants to spend time here other than to bathe, there are many things to do in the area.
The entire lake can be biked through on the renovated bicycle paths while enjoying the picturesque scenery and diverse natural beauty. The hiking trails on the north side of the Velence Hills is suitable for the more athletic, while the flat area on the southern shore of the lake is an ideal choice for those looking for a more relaxed experience.
Visiting the towns and villages surrounding Lake Velence, we can choose from numerous exciting and beautiful attractions, including the Memorial Museum of renowned Hungarian writer Géza Gárdonyi, the Castle Park in Dinnyés, the mansion of the Halász family in Dabas, the museum of famous Hungarian poet Mihály Vörösmarty, the Ethnographic House in Sukoró, or the gorgeous arboretum on Mészeg hill.
