Some 150 university professors and students staged a demonstration to protest against the centralisation of higher education and the decrease in universities’ autonomy in front of Parliament on Sunday evening. A symbolic football match was also staged at the demonstration between the universities and the government where “politicians” received a larger half and a smaller goal, as well as constant help from the referee.

The event was organised by the Network of Academics (OHA) comprising university teachers and the Facebook community called Our Universities in Danger Group. Speaking at the event, Balázs Majtényi, an associate professor at ELTE Budapest University, said the government had used unfair methods and transformed the higher education system without consultations.

As a result, 60 departments have been cancelled and the National University of Public Service has “monopolised” training in public administration, he added. A symbolic football match was staged at the demonstration at the square in front of Parliament between the universities and the government where “politicians” received a larger half and a smaller goal, as well as constant help from the referee.
