From this September, LGBTQ couples can also access spousal benefits worth HUF 50,000 (EUR 145) in Terézváros, the 6th municipal district of Budapest.
Tamás Soproni (Momentum), the centrist-liberal mayor of Terézváros, announced that spousal benefits – so far only available for straight couples – will be extended to gay couples in his district.
“The Hungarian LGBTQ community still faces serious challenges today,” Soproni said. Although symbolic gestures like displaying the rainbow flag are important, the time has come for more practical steps to support the gay community, he added.
He condemned those who want to gain support by promoting homophobic messages.
He stressed the importance of accepting LGBTQ people and wants to lead by example in his district.
