Socialist PM Candidate Says He Would Dismantle Border Fence If Migrant Crisis Eases

Tamás Székely 2017.05.26.

Socialist PM candidate László Botka said in an interview with Reuters that if he were the Prime Minister he would dismantle Hungary’s controversial anti-migrant border fence on the Southern border with Serbia. Ruling Fidesz party has slammed Botka for his remark, claiming he is “danger to the security of Hungarians.”

In fact, Botka was quoted as saying nothing more than

he would dismantle a fence along the border with Serbia as soon as European Union border protection controls are in place and the situation in the Middle East calms down.

However, Botka’s remark is now widely seen in the Hungarian media as a major tactical mistake that has been committed in a very early phase of next year’s elections campaign.

Lajos Kósa, the group leader of ruling Fidesz has said in reaction that the Hungarian Socialist Party’s (MSZP) Prime Minister candidate “is a danger to the security of Hungarians.” Referring to the Manchester terrorist attack, Kósa told a press conference that Botka had timed his remarks to Reuters right after “the most brutal terrorist attack targeting children”.

“If László Botka were given the chance” he would pose a major danger to Hungary, Kósa argued, adding that the opposition Socialists if elected would “allow migrants in unimpeded; they would pull down the fence and deliver Hungary to this modern-age exodus.”
