Socialist (MSZP) MEP István Ujhelyi on Friday called on the European Union to assign specific funding for supporting independent investigative media in the 2021-2027 financial cycle.
Ujhelyi told an online press conference that he had briefed the EU’s presidency and the European Council, as well as leaders of the European Parliament and the European Commission on the initiative.
Ujhelyi called independent media outlets important tools of free information, and said the current 11 EU tenders did not provide enough funding. “European institutions are still blind to the fact that European democracy, our union, peace and stability” depend on “true” information reaching European citizens, Ujhelyi said.
He insisted that Hungary was “just one step away from the government getting its claws into all domestic media outlets to stop independent, truthful reporting”.
