Hungarian students, aged 15 and a half or younger, came home with one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals from the European Junior Olympiad in Informatics (eJOI), the Neumann Society announced. This performance is the best the Hungarian team has ever displayed at this competition.
Romania hosted this year’s eJOI at the end of August, which was held online due to the pandemic. Besides students from 29 other countries, a total of eight Hungarians participated in two delegations: four were invited as official participants and four as practice team members from Miskolc. Both delegations’ members were prepared for the competition by the Neumann Society’s talent management department.
All four Hungarian students who were officially competing won medals: Ádám Molnár István, a student from Ferenc Földes High School in Miskolc, won a gold medal as he finished fourth. Marcell Németh, a student of ELTE Bolyai Grammar School in Szombathely, claimed a silver medal, finishing 27th. Pál Czanik, a student of Fazekas Mihály Grammar School in Budapest, finished 30th winning a bronze medal, while Máté Fülöp, a student of Péter Veres Grammar School in Békásmegyer (Budapest), finished 35th, similarly claiming a bronze.
Among those students who unofficially participated at the eJOI, Marcell Jenei (Szent László Catholic Grammar School, Kisvárda) finished 39th, winning a bronze.
Telex notes that Hungarian students perform typically well in computer science: one of the Hungarian participants in the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) clinched a silver medal, and the Hungarian competitors in the International Olympiad in Informatics bagged three medals this year.
