“The Most Beautiful Goal”: Unknown Brasilian Wins FIFA Award Named After Hungarian Legend – Video!

By Tamás Székely // 2016.01.12.

Brazilian footballer Wendell Lira won the 2015 FIFA Puskás Award for his spinning bicycle kick while playing for Goianesia in the Brazilian Goias state championship. Lira received 46.7 percent of the vote, well ahead of Barcelona star Lionel Messi’s 33.3 percent  and 7.1 percent for Alessandro Florenzi of Roma. Messi, however, has every reason to celebrate as the Barcelona and Argentina star was awarded the 2015 Ballon d’Or at same FIFA gala held in Zurich on Monday.

As he strode into the opposition penalty area, Wendell Lira exchanged a quick glance with his team-mate on the ball, who promptly lofted a pass over the defence. Without breaking his stride, the forward twisted around and leapt into the air to connect and bury a wonderful bicycle-kick. (FIFA.com)

The Puskás Award was established in 2009 by FIFA in order to award the player, who scored the “most beautiful” goal of the year. The award is in honor of legendary Hungarian footballer Ferenc Puskás, the striker for the Real Madrid team of the late 1950s and the 1960s, and central member of the highly successful Hungarian side of the same era. Puskás scored a once world record of 84 goals in 85 internationals as he is one of the top scorers of the 20th century with 512 goals in 528 matches.
