PM Orbán: Slowing Down Immigration Is Not Enough, It Has To Be Stopped Completely

Ferenc Sullivan 2016.01.08.

A new “line of defence” is needed on Greece’s northern border because immigration has to be stopped instead of merely being slowed down, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has argued on public radio.

The Hungarian leader also said on state-run Kossuth Rádió’s programme “180 Minutes” on Friday morning that changes are necessary to EU treaties in order to put an end to “Brusselsism”, or the covert distraction of competences from nation-states.  The fundamental question of 2016 is whether Europe will finally come to realise that immigration must be stopped instead of merely being slowed down, he argued, pointing out that Bulgaria should join the Schengen zone and Macedonia should be strengthened in order to build the line of defence in northern Greece.

In the programme, he also spoke of the necessity of amending the European Union’s fundamental treaty and accused the phenomenon he described as “Brusselism” of covertly distracting competences from nation-states. If a problem of any kind appears in the EU, the first reaction is that “an European reaction is needed immediately and nation-states need to be stripped from competences”, he argued, pointing out his conviction that “Brusselsism” cannot be rooted out without treaty amendment.

The radio interview also covered Prime Minister Orbán’s discussions with Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of Poland’s ruling conservative PiS party, on Wednesday. PM Orbán stressed that Hungary will never support EU sanctions against Poland. “Let’s show more respect to the Poles because they deserve it”, he stressed.
