Paloznak Jazz Picnic 2018: ‘Picnicking is Encouraged!’

Fanni Kaszás 2018.07.19.

Paloznak Jazz Picnic, a three-day festival with more than 20 music performances taking place on four stages, will be held for the seventh time between 2-4 August in Paloznak, one of the most picturesque villages on the northern shore of Lake Balaton.

For its seventh year, the picnic creates a unique atmosphere beginning with a huge, all night concert. The opening act of the day will be two-time Grammy-winner Jamie Cullum, while Friday and Saturday will see a line-up of exciting international and Hungarian performers.

This year, one of the stages is named after the exceptional Hungarian jazz singer, Juli Fábián, who passed away last December at the age of 37. Performing every year, she was one of the main singers since the picnic’s conception; Fábián even marked last year’s festival hymn. A special concert will take place on the stage in her honor.

In 2018, the audience can explore the worlds of funk, swing, and hip-hop with the unbelievably energetic music group Electro Deluxe or dance to electro-funk hits by Kraak & Smaak. The picnic will present true classics of jazz and soul like Grammy-winner SOUL II SOUL ft Jazzie B & Caron Wheeler, as well as Geszti+Jazz+Az+Lányok, an act boasting a unique line-up and an exceptional performance.

Besides the music performances, the three-day festival welcomes visitors with children’s programs, festival buses to the site, lightmapping, and of course the best local wines and cuisine from around the Lake Balaton.

Szabolcs Homola and Orsolya Valde’s dream came to fruition in 2015, resulting in an event bringing the best wines and music to Lake Balaton. With the added addition of picnic baskets and blankets on the grass, the atmosphere was complete; soon, the event grew from a small jamboree in the courtyard of Tájház in Paloznak, to a three-day-long festival with international performers, eventually becoming the pillar of the Very Balaton event series.

In 2016, the Jazz Picnic welcomed ten thousand visitors during its three-day span. In recent years they hosted international stars such as Candy Dulfer, Jazzanova, Al McKey’ Earth Wind and Fire Experience, Incognito, St. Germain, Dephazz, Mezzoforte, Juli Fábián, Mrs. Columbo, Amoeba, and Bin Jip.
