Oscar-Winning Hungarian Director István Szabó Honored at Belgrade International Film Festival
Oscar winning Hungarian director István Szabó received the special award “Belgrade Victor” in recognition of his outstanding contribution to film art at the FEST Belgrade International Film Festival this weekend.
Szabó, who won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for Mephisto in 1982, received the award together with Serbian actress Neda Arnerić, while the Belgrade Victor creative achievement award went to director Karen Shakhnazarov and British director Roland Joffe.
Accepting the honor, the 80-year-old director spoke with high regard about his friendship with Serbian actor and director Ljubiša Samardžić, who died last year, as well as with Serbian director Dušan Makaveje,v and Serbian-Hungarian actress and writer Eva Ras.

Márta Mészáros’s film Aurora Borealis will compete for the main award of the 46th FEST along with 15 other films from Denmark, Iran, China, Argentina, Lebanon, Greece, Croatia, the USA, Russia, Italy and Switzerland.
