Origo.hu: Former Academy Heads Among Hungarian Presidential Candidates

Tamás Székely 2016.04.04.

Either József Pálinkás or Szilveszter Vizi E could be the next Hungarian President, news portal origo.hu reported. The two candidates, former heads of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, both seem to be ideal successor of current President János Áder, because Prime Minister Viktor Orbán might prefer a candidate who enjoys nationwide reputation and does not have strong party affiliations but an outstanding scientific career, according to origo.hu.

Sándor Palace in the Buda Castle

If the news portal’s sources are telling the truth, János Áder will have to move out of the Sándor Palace, residency of the Hungarian heads of state in the Buda castle, as soon as next year. Previously Hungarian media tipped László Kövér, speaker of the Parliament, for the president role, however, as a leading figure of ruling Fidesz party, Kövér might not have the Prime Minister’s support. Furthermore, Kövér has been rather critical to some members of the government recently. As for János Áder, he would probably accept to extend his term, an idea that the majority of Fidesz MPs would rather disapprove due to Áder’s practice of sending back laws to the Parliament.
