Govt ‘Awaits New Era’ in Immigration Policy after Announcement of new EC

MTI-Hungary Today 2019.09.11.

The government awaits a new era in the European Union’s immigration policy, the government information centre said in a statement on Tuesday, responding to the unveiling by Ursula Von der Leyen of the new European Commission, including former Hungarian justice minister László Trócsányi as the next EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy.

The statement said the government had already made clear its expectations of the new commission. Hopefully the new commission will bring more balanced and sober EU leadership while opening a new era in EU immigration policy, it said.

The statement said that “the Hungarian people have made clear that they expect the new Brussels leadership to stop immigration and protect a Europe of nations and Christian culture.” Trócsányi, it added, shares these values.

Trócsányi Would Get Desired Enlargement Portfolio in EC

The government information centre said it was for this reason that the European Parliament’s “anti-immigration forces” would do their best to prevent his appointment.

Neighborhood policy and EU enlargement is among the most important portfolios and there are opportunities for the EU to gain in strength by integrating new member states. Stabilising the Western Balkans and stopping migration are important aims, the statement said.
