PMO Head: European Parliament Not EU’s most Important Institution

The biggest winners of last month’s European Parliament elections were the political groups that were subjected to the strongest attacks in recent years and the weeks leading up to the vote, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office said on Wednesday.
Addressing a conference on the future of the European Union organised by the Center for Fundamental Rights in Budapest, Gergely Gulyás cited the EP election outcomes in Hungary, Poland and Italy as examples.
At the same time, he said the EP was “nowhere close to being the EU’s most important institution”. Gulyás said the bloc’s most important forum was the European Council of member state leaders. The EP alone is not powerful enough to determine the course of the EU, he said, adding that the most the legislative body could do was temporarily block the path chosen by the council.
Given that the EU’s most important decisions are made by the European Council, “we have good reason to be optimistic,” Gulyás said.
