Night of the Museums hit record attendance numbers at several museums, announced secretary for culture Péter Hoppál at a press event on Monday. This year marked the fourteenth time the event took place as the number of institutions participating increased by 30% from last year. Science, art, national and local museums all across the nation stayed open until midnight after the longest day of the summer celebrating knowledge and promoting the importance of culture.
A night when Hungary’s museums open their doors, on 21 June institutions across the country awaited visitors interested in partaking special flashlight-lit guided tours and unique exhibitions. Adults and children alike enjoyed the countless programs and wonders of the 124 museum in Budapest and 308 institutions outside of the capital. The museums and cultural institutions of Hungary hosted a record number of 4000 cultural events.
The Herman Ottó Museum is Miskolc has seen a record visitor number of 20,000, the Hungarian Agricultural Museum reached 11,200, while countrywide total attendance number has reached 400,000, cultural portal kultura.hu reports. The Night of the Museums official website has reached a number of 1.6 million visits as Hungarians everywhere decided to spend their Saturdays exploring their local institutions in a different light.
