Moscow Classical Ballet Company Comes to Hungary

The Budapest Summer Festival welcomes Moscow Classical Ballet to its Margaret Island Open-air Stage this Friday. The internationally renowned ballet company will present Igor Stravinsky’s masterpieces of The Rite of Spring and Firebird. The Budapest Summer Festival takes places between 6 June and 7 September, with rich cultural programs presented on stages on Margaret Island and in Budapest’s Városmajor area.

The Russian Ballet premiered The Rite of Spring, a vision about Russian pagan rituals, back in 1913 with Vaslav Nijinsky’s choreography causing a serious scandal. While audince may have booed at such a upsetting performance, it is still considered the birth of modern ballet. The second performance, The Firebird, is another all time classic ballet using traditional elements of European and Russian folk tales to tell the story of eternal struggle between good and evil.

The Moscow Classical Ballet performance of the Firebird and The Rite os Spring is set to promote Hungarian-Russian cultural relations. The ballet company’s motto of “all genres except tedious”  is a clear indication of what to expect as ballet enthusiasts await the rare performances.
