The Mi Hazánk (Our Homeland) party has vowed to hold a demonstration on Saturday against Hungary’s LGBTQ community in connection with a book which it claims is an “aberrant distortion” of a classic fairy tale.
László Toroczkai, the leader of the non-parliamentary party, told a press conference on Wednesday that the book, which retells fairy tales with sexual and ethnic minorities as main characters, amounted to “an attack on the soul and healthy development of young children”.
Mi Hazánk deputy leader Dóra Dúró last week shredded a copy of the book, igniting controversy and condemnation. Toroczkai insisted that the LGBTQ community had “made death threats” against the politician. He claimed that “mothers” were threatened by self-styled victims of discrimination who “are actually aggressively attacking a healthy society”.
