The Hungarian National Film Fund received more than 2,000 requests to film in public places last year. Since then, Hollywood stars have been pouring into Budapest. Now, the Black Widow movie is rumored to be shot in the Hungarian capital.
According to HN Entertainment, the new Marvel Film starring Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, “is indeed looking to shoot scenes in mainland Europe with Budapest, Hungary highlighted.” The website added that the locations may later be used for secondary filming as well.
The Hungarian capital would be a perfect choice for several reasons. Romanoff is Russian, and if they plan to include the character’s origin story, there’s a good chance Budapest would stand in for Russia. After all, this was previously done with Jennifer Lawrence’s Red Sparrow.
Budapest has been mentioned in the Avengers films before. The Black Widow and Hawkeye were sent on a mission to the Hungarian capital as agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. During the mission, they were involved in a situation that would later be remembered by Romanoff during the Battle of New York, a fight she said reminded her of Budapest. Hawkeye, however, couldn’t recall what had happened.
The Budapest story was covered in Marvel’s first installment of Secret Avengers comics. Since Hawkeye was captured the whole time, he remembers the situation differently than the Black Widow. However, these comics are not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Therefore, what happened in Budapest is still unknown in the films. If the rumors are true, maybe the upcoming film will finally reveal what occurred in the capital.
