Revitalizing Margit Körút – A Budapest Boulevard Undergoing Change

Hungary Today 2022.04.16.

7 restaurants, 4 galleries, 3 community initiatives, 2 grocery stores, and 3 fashion shops have moved into Margaret Boulevard and its surroundings as part of the Margaret Quarter revitalization program, Telex reports.

It used to be one of the most vibrant places in Budapest, but for decades, life, along with so many shops at one point, has been disappearing from Margaret Boulevard. Now, they want to change that, to turn back the clock – or to give new meaning and new life to this once vibrant part of the capital.

Fact

The Margaret Quarter is a revitalization program for Margaret Boulevard and its surroundings. The aim of the project is to create an ecosystem in the area where community and cultural initiatives can find a place alongside quality commercial services, according to their website writes.

So far, 19 empty shops have found new owners. The next step is to make Margit Boulevard and its surroundings green, with bigger, lengthier islands of plants and trees, Mayor Gergely Őrsi said.

He added that on Margit körút, the main focus will be on pedestrian traffic, but they are confident that in the future, road traffic will also be reduced. However, there will be no cycle lane on Margaret Boulevard for the time being, because the cycle lane in Varsányi Irén street provides a good detour for cyclists.
