March 15: Gyurcsány: ‘Time to Fight is Now’

MTI-Hungary Today 2019.03.15.

“The time to fight is now,” Ferenc Gyurcsány, leader of the leftist opposition Democratic Coalition (DK), said in his speech at his party’s commemoration of the 1848-49 revolution and freedom fight on Friday, adding that it was not enough for Hungarians to “complain and moan”.

“The extra-parliamentary opposition can only oust the dictators together,” Gyurcsány said. He said Hungary’s parliamentary opposition “are not capable of solving this problem on their own”, arguing that Hungary was not a parliamentary democracy.

“Protesting on the streets and striking may be exhausting, but the homeland is worth this much,” he said. Gyurcsány called on Hungarians to “revolt wherever they can”.

He said the only condition for cooperation among the opposition parties was that none of them must question human dignity, democracy or the principle of the rule of law.

But the devil can’t be replaced by Lucifer”

Gyurcsány said, adding that the opposition’s goal was not merely to oust Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, but to make Hungary a country in which everyone looks out for one another.

He said Hungary’s situation today was “also infecting Europe”. Gyurcsány said he expects every European country to take good care of their shared continent and understand that if Hungary hits trouble, eventually they would, too.
