The local government and minority elections of October are set to cost about EUR 22 million (7 billion HUF), reported the National Election Office (Nemzeti Választási Iroda, NVI) in response to a query by portal Napi Gazdaság. There is no exact number of candidates yet, and so the total volume expected is still unknown.
The new mayor of Budapest would work in a different environment as only three deputy mayors will be chosen instead of the five, confirmed István Tarlós, mayor of Budapest in an interview for radio Info. Tarlós also named one of his proposed deputies, Gábor Bagdy, who is also the deputy in this term. Bagdy would be responsible for the city’s financial, economic and property management. The mayor would also like to name a human resources and research deputy, although István Tarlós could not be more specific.
In other news the opposition is still in the process of naming their candidates as the Modern Hungary Movement (Modern Magyarország Mozgalom, Moma) joins the line of statements, claiming that they will not have candidates in constituencies where left parties have a serious chance against Fidesz. The party, led by former Minister of Economics and EP member Lajor Bokros, will have a final list by August 9. The local government elections are set to take place in October, an exact date is yet to be announced officially.
