Local Elections – Fidesz’s Borkai Re-elected Mayor of Győr Despite Scandal

Fidesz’s Zsolt Borkai, who is at the center of media attention for more than one week due to his sex-tape scandal, has been re-elected Mayor of Győr yesterday.

According to the National Election Office, he garnered 641 votes more than the joint opposition candidate in the North-western city.

His sex-tape scandal, together with corruption allegations, has been making headlines in Hungary for ten days now.

On Saturday, Momentum party organised a protest in Győr, that drew several hundred demonstrators.

Two days before the elections, Budapest’s outgoing mayor István Tarlós told about Borkai’s case that “it is undefendable, unacceptable and unworthy,” concluding with the question “does he not realise what he should do?”

On the day of the elections, Viktor Orbán said he supported “the people of Győr” who “are giving their opinion today, while I would give mine tomorrow”.

On Sunday, Borkai arrived just before closing time to cast his vote with his wife.

Candidates for the mayor of Győr, have garnered the following percentage of votes with 100 percent of the votes counted:

1. Zsolt Borkai (FIDESZ-KDNP) – 44.33 percent (19 312 votes)

2. Tímea Glázer (DK-MOMENTUM-MSZP-JOBBIK-LMP) – 42.86 percent (18,671 votes)

3. László Kovács (Civilians for Győr) – 8.44 percent (3,677 votes)

4. Jenő Balla (Unity for Győr Assoc.) – 4.37 percent (1,906 votes)
