At stake in next month’s municipal elections is whether Hungary “will become a democratic and European country”, Democratic Coalition MEP Klára Dobrev said in Debrecen, in eastern Hungary, on Monday.
“A European and democratic country can’t exist without European and democratic local councils,” Dobrev, who serves as a vice-president of the European Parliament, told a town hall meeting.
She accused ruling Fidesz’s mayors of “carrying out the orders of their party’s leadership” instead of representing their voters.
“This is what we’re going to change,” she said, encouraging those present to vote for Zoltán Varga, the joint mayoral candidate of the Democratic Coalition, the Socialist Party, Párbeszéd and the Solidarity Movement, on October 13.
