LMP Urges Law to Donate Unsold Food to Poor

MTI-Hungary Today 2019.01.08.

Opposition LMP will submit a proposal to enact that unsold but still consumable food products should be given to needy people, a board member of the party announced on Tuesday.

Szabolcs Turcsán told a press conference that a total 2 million tonnes of food ends up in Hungary’s waste bins each year, including nearly 300 tonnes of expired products thrown away by shops.

LMP seeks legislation following Czech and French examples stipulating that supermarkets should give away those goods to charity organisations, he said, adding that the law should include guarantees that the goods actually reach their destination in poor households. The proposal is also aimed at ensuring the necessary financing from central coffers to cover the necessary logistics, Turcsan added.
