Opposition LMP will ask the Foreign Ministry to release data about the planned Budapest-Belgrade rail line, Hungary’s largest development project, the leader of the party’s parliamentary group said on Thursday.
LMP seeks to know in the first place whether the investment will be profitable and whether the Chinese project partner has given a guarantee to make full use of the line, László Lóránt Keresztes told an online press conference.
The green party also wants the project’s technical content to be revealed, he said.
If the party’s request remains unanswered, it will take legal steps to access the project’s documents, which the ministry has classified for ten years, Keresztes said.
“This project makes absolutely no sense,” he said. “By investing 1,000 billion forints (EUR 2.8bn), the government has betrayed Hungary’s interests.”

“The government could use the 140 billion forints earmarked for the project in 2021 to create 125,000 jobs,” he added.
