The green LMP party on Thursday called on the government to review and scrap all investments harming natural habitats in Hungary, and to regroup the funding of such projects to help coronavirus protection.

Party co-leader Erzsébet Schmuck told an online press conference that companies tied to business magnet Lőrinc Mészáros were building a hundred-room luxury hotel on the shore of Lake Fertő, near the Austrian border. The construction takes place on a 52-hectare property belonging to the Fertő-Hanság National Park, a bird and nature reserve under the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage programme, she said.

“Rather than a 23 billion forint (EUR 63.1m) government grant, Mészáros would deserve punishment and prison” on charges of harming the environment, she said.

Besides the locals bearing the brunt of the pollution and noise of the construction, 30 environment protection organisations from 20 countries have raised their voices against the project, Schmuck said, and called on people to sign the LMP’s online petition on the subject.
