Hungarian skating brothers Shaoang Liu and Shaolin Sándor Liu gave extremely compelling performances at the European Short Track Speed Skating Championships at Debrecen’s Főnix Aréna. The two skating superstars have managed to collect four gold and three silver medals for Hungary in various races.
On the first day of the finals on Saturday, Shaoang Liu won the men’s 1,500 meter final. His brother, Shaolin Sándor Liu, also had a shot to get a medal but unfortunately, he slipped out in the final lap of the race, falling back to seventh place. In the men’s 500 meter competition, however, Shaolin Sándor made up for his slip and won just before his brother.
Just like Saturday in the 500 meter, on Sunday the siblings managed to score a double Hungarian success: Shaolin Sándor Liu bagged the gold medal while his younger brother Shaoang Liu finished second with a silver.
In the super final closing the individual races, the only question was whether the Liu brothers could hold the first two places. With a stellar performance, Shaoang Liu won his first overall European Championship title with 77 points, while his brother finished close second with 75 points.
Unfortunately, in the relay race, neither the men’s nor the women’s team made it to the podium, despite both teams having every chance prior. They were penalized due to fouls during the races, both landing in fourth place.
Although the title defender team of Shaolin Sándor Liu, Shaoang Liu, Cole Krueger, and John-Henry Krueger were the first to cross the finish line, due to Shaolin Liu’s foul, the jury rescinded their win.

However, the slight disappointment of the last race could not cast a shadow over the young brothers’ great performance.
With four gold and three silver medals, the Hungarian national team finished second behind the Dutch at the medal table at the European Short Track Speed Skating Championships.
The Liu brothers managed to score all the medals for Hungary. Shaoang won two gold and two silver medals, while Shaolin Sándor won two gold and one silver.
