House Speaker László Kövér had talks in Shanghai and noted the city’s crucial importance for the Hungarian economy, parliament’s press chief told MTI on Thursday.

After László Kövér has held talks with Li Junhzu, the deputy head of the People’s Congress of China’s Shaanxi Province, in the capital city of Xi’an now he visited the deputy mayor of Shangai. “Shanghai has become a gateway for Hungary to China,” Kövér said after talks with Jin Ju-cui, head of the local People’s Assembly and Xu Kunlin, deputy mayor of Shanghai. He added that as much as 40 percent of Hungary’s trade with China went through Shanghai. “We are glad that China’s most dynamically developing area, an economic, trade, and innovation centre is Hungary’s partner,” Kövér said after the talks, and voiced hope that bilateral economic and cultural relations would be “filled with unprecedented content and made even more intensive”.

Kövér visited the Shanghai International Studies University, and met students and teachers of the Hungarian Faculty, which was opened last year. The house speaker also visited Shanghai Museum and saw an exhibition arranged by the Hungarian National Museum presenting the life of Hungarian aristocrats in the 17th-19th centuries.
