László Kovács and Vilmos Zsigmond Cinematographer Award Founded

Fanni Kaszás 2017.12.28.

The László Kovács and Vilmos Zsigmond cinematography award, named after two outstanding Hungarian cinematographers, was founded by Sparks camera and lamp rental company, the Hungarian Society of Cinematographers  and the Hungarian Cinematographers’ School.

The competition and cinematographer festival will take over and continue the tradition of the Aranyszem (Golden Eye) Cinematographer Festival, which was founded by Emil Novák in 2004.

Awards will be given in January each year, with the exception of the first award ceremony: it will be held on 30 June 2018 in Budapest’s Vigadó. Organizers hope that the event will be equivalently important to the international cinematographer festival, Camerimage.

2018 will be an extremely important year for cameramen as 80 years ago, in 1938, István Somkuti founded the first organization of cinematographers, the Hungarian Society of Cinematographers (HSC).

Since the middle of the 2000s, Vilmos Zsigmond supported winners of the student category at Aranyszem Cinematographer Competitions, thus in the first year – unconventionally – prizes will be awarded only in the student film category. Additionally, honorary awards will be given to cinematographers who, like Vilmos Zsigmond and László Kovács, with their outstanding work in international productions, attracted attention to the hungarian cinematographer techniques.

Students can apply for the competition free of charge at www.stabiskola.hu until 13 January 2018 with films made or presented between 1 January and 31 December 2017.

Awards will be decided by a professional jury, including Tamás Lajos producer-cinematographer, András Nagy cinematographer, Csaba Káel director – who worked with Vilmos Zsigmond on Bánk Bán -, and Emil Novák cinematographer, president of the Hungarian Film Academy Association.

Besides the award, the best student filmmaker will also receive a camera package offered by Sparks Kft. and Vilmos Zsigmond and the services of Hungarian Filmlabor. The László Kovács and Vilmos Zsigmond cinematographer competition will be sponsored by the Hungarian Academy of Arts, Hungarian National Film Foundation and Sparks Kft.
