Last Week In The Hungarian Cup: Ferencváros Dominates, Vasas Secures An Aggregate Advantage

By Robert Velkey // 2017.05.02.

The semifinals of the Hungarian Cup / Magyar Kupa began on Wednesday, April 26th. Like the quarterfinals, the semis are played on an aggregate system, as securing a spot in the championship is based upon scoring more goals over two matches.

In the first match of the round, historical first-tier powerhouse Ferencváros hosted third-tier Budafoki MTE at Groupama Arena. While Ferencváros sits at 4th in the NB I, Budafoki is in 1st in the third-tier. Unfortunately, Budafoki’s lower league prowess failed to manifest in semifinal success.

Ferencváros dominated their lower league rival from the start, with István Bognar scoring striking first in the 13th minute. Daniel Böde and Roland Varga each added their own as well, in the 26th and 38th minute, respectively. For the next 20 minutes, Fradi showed absolutely no mercy. From the 40th to 58th minute, Ferencváros scored five goals. In the end, István Bognar, Daniel Böde, and Marco Djuricin lead the way with two goals each. Roland Varga and Amadou Moutari each added one.

The two clubs will meet next Wednesday, May 17th at 3:00 PM, although this one seems all but over.

The second match of the day was a bit more interesting. Vasas hosted Mezőkövesd-Zsóry at Szusza Ferenc Stadion in Budapest. Unlike the Ferencváros match, this matchup started off a bit slower, with the score remaining 0-0 until extra time of the first half. In the 46th minute, Zsombor Berecz took advantage of a Vasas penalty kick, lifting the club to a 1-0 halftime lead. Vasas came out fast in the second half, with Tamás Kulcsár slotting home a goal in the 49th minute, giving the club a 2-0 advantage. After a stellar defensive half, Vasas managed to pull out a victory of the same margin.

The second leg of this matchup will take place on Wednesday, May 17th.

Although there is certainly football left to be played, it appears that we’re going to see a Ferencváros vs. Vasas Magyar Kupa finals.
