Last Minute Espanyol Goal Takes Away Ferencváros Win

Ábrahám Vass 2019.11.29.

A thrilling game and injury time drama meant Ferencváros drew (2-2) once again with Spanish Primera División side RCD Espanyol in the Europa League group stage. As a result, the green-whites are still in for the qualification to the next round.

An almost sold-out Groupama Aréna and passionate atmosphere awaited the former EL-finalist Spanish team in Budapest. Since they are already qualified for the next round and in the Spanish Championships, they are fighting to avoid relegation, some of their key players missed the game, other well-known names in the starting eleven like Iturraspe and Granero, however, signalled Ferencváros would still have a hard time.

The 9th district team started very motivated and with the help of the fans’ loud support, sought to dominate the game. After two lucky goals in the first half and a missed penalty in the 77th minute, most thought the game would end with 1-1, just like the first leg in Barcelona. Škvarka, however, scored from a second penalty just four minutes before the final whistle, promising Fradi’s victory. The thrill then increased even further and after Civic was sent off, Espanyol had one more bullet to shoot at the very end of the game.

Although Ferencváros just needed seconds to secure victory, the green-whites shouldn’t be disappointed either as they are only ones remaining unbeaten by the Barcelona side in the group stage.

As the other game in Group H -between Fradi’s rival for the group’s second place Bulgarian Ludogorets and CSKA- ended in a draw (1-1), the path is simple for Ferencváros: it needs a victory in the last round in Razgrad to secure qualification. A triumph in Bulgaria would mean that Fradi ‘survives’ autumn and ‘sees’ the spring in either of the international cups -an achievement Hungarian football has lacked since Debrecen made it to the third leg of the UEFA Cup back in 2004. The game will not be easy as the Bulgarian side won in Budapest a few weeks ago but Ferencváros players now have the chance to take revenge and prove their worth.
