A “verbal cold war” has been waged against Hungary, parliamentary speaker László Kövér said and added that Brussels cannot dictate what to do in Hungary like once Moscow did. Kövér told news channel HírTV that if anybody “west of us” takes democracy seriously, they should stop the “verbal cold war” because it could ruin the positive image that Hungarians have of the Western Europe.
He said no mistake committed by the government gives reason or moral justification for the developments against Hungary. Mistakes have indeed been made by the government but ever since 2010, Hungary has been subjected to “unfair accusations and flagrant slandering”. “Nobody has the moral superiority in western Europe to explain us how to behave like democrats”, Kövér said.
Euractiv.com also reported that Kövér had criticized harshly the European Union. The speaker said that if this is the direction the EU takes, then Hungary should consider leaving the union. He added however that this was only “a nightmare” scenario, and that he doubted it would come to that. The speaker was quoted as saying that the EU and NATO are not the problem, but rather that the “Euroatlantic world is shaken in a moral sense”. According to the house speaker, since the end of communism, the governments and financial leaders of some Western countries believe they can do everything without consequences.
