Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony said on Thursday that former mayors Gábor Demszky and István Tarlós have been recognised for their work and achievements, reflected by the General Assembly’s decision to award them the status of honorary citizen of the city.
The awards carry added significance as the city’s assembly made its decision on the 30th anniversary of the institution of local governance in Hungary, Karácsony said on Facebook.
Karácsony noted that last October, when he first went to the City Hall as Budapest’s new mayor, he promised to propose the honorary citizenships to his two predecessors.
Karácsony said he was glad that the proposal had been supported in the General Assembly because he believed in a country where “the participants in political debates can be opponents but never enemies”.
